The Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, or Toyota 86 – whatever you’d like to call it – is one of the most celebrated sports coupes in the recent years. Combining a light weight car (2774 pounds) with a 200hp rear wheel drive drivetrain makes for a very exciting car at any level of driving ability.
While the largest complaint of the 86 is its lack of power, the car makes up for it with its pure sports car qualities and intention of being a fun car to drive first and foremost.
I mean, the car is based on a lightweight 80s Corolla that has obtained cult status among car enthusiasts. The new 86 is a modernized version of it that places driver joy and affordability at the front of importance. How can anyone be mad at that? I digress…
Also please be aware of our bias for the 86 – the crew here at Furious Customs has owned one for 5 years!
If you’re reading this article, then chances are that you already have a Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, or Toyota 86, or are thinking about getting one and already planning out the coolest wheels possible for your new ride. Let’s move on to the wheels then!
Perhaps the most popular style when it comes to wheels for the FR-S is the JDM Time Attack / Motorsports look. This style includes one-piece cast wheels as well as one-piece forged wheels.
Popular brands include Volk Racing, Advan Racing, Work Wheels, WedsSport, SSR and Enkei. These wheels are often lightweight and stiff – ideal for racing your 86.
Furious Customs is a dealer for all wheels shown on this page so please visit our site or contact us if you'd like a set for your car!
Volk Racing TE-37 – 18x9.5” +40

Starting with a heavy hitter and possibly the most popular wheel when it comes to the JDM time attack / motorsport style is the almighty Volk TE-37 wheel. Available in many different specs and colors, this wheel has been a tuner favorite for years and for good reason – super lightweight, epic clean design, and JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) style appeal. This forged wheel is best in its concave faces, which for the 86 would be a 18x9.5” +40.
Wheel Model | Volk Racing ZE40 |
Size | 18x10" +40 |
Link | BUY HERE |
One of Volk Racing’s newest, popular wheels on the market is the ZE40 model. It’s a 10 spoke wheel with normally a pretty deep concave face. Not only does the concave face look amazing, but it is great for those that also have a big brake kit. We love the different finishes available on the wheel such as velvet blue, motorsport green, and classic colors like black, bronze, or gold. For JDM nerds, this wheel was very refreshing to see in Volk Racing’s lineup that has been dominated by the TE37 for years.
Wheel Model | Advan GT |
Size | 18x9.5" +42 |
Link | BUY HERE |
One of the cleanest and lightest one piece wheels on the market has to be the Advan GT. It features a simple 5 spoke face with a great flat lip and combines clean aesthetics with motorsport ready use. JDM fans will know this name well and especially its long history with motorsports like drifting, time attack, and JGTC.
Work Emotion CR Kiwami – 18x9.5” +38
Wheel Model | Work Emotion CR Kiwami |
Size | 18x9.5" +38 |
Link | BUY HERE |
Another heavy hitter is the Work Emotion CR Kiwami. This split 5 spoke wheel has a long history, specifically with the drifting community, due to its aggressive motorsports aesthetic and range of custom fitments. The Deep Concave face is the way to go on this wheel if your car can fit it – I would recommend a wide body kit to fit the ultra concave 18x10.5” +15 fitment.
WedsSport TC-105X – 18x9.5” +45
Wheel Model | WedsSport TC-105X |
Size | 18x9.5" +45 |
Link | BUY HERE |
Coming in at a mere 17.9 lbs per wheel in the 18x9.5” spec is the WedsSport TC-105X wheel. The price / performance ratio is hard to beat on this wheel as it outperforms most forged wheels on both price and weight. While there are many replicas of this wheel, it’s not really much more expensive to go with the real deal and enjoy the benefits of having the peace of mind of quality and the light weight benefits that this wheel offers.
Enkei RPF1 – 18x9.5” +38 via @FRS8SIX
Wheel Model | Enkei RPF1 |
Size | 18x9.5" +38 |
Link | BUY HERE |
A classic wheel in our opinion, the Enkei RPF1 is possibly one of the most used wheels in motorsports and is a fantastic option for budget minded Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 racers. Coming in at only 18.2 pounds per wheel with a cost of around $1000 per set in this aggressive fitment, it’s a no brainer for many to go with a tried and true wheel used by thousands worldwide. The wheel has a long history of use in professional racing on the grassroots level as well as use in Formula One. If you can’t tell, it’s one of the house favorites here at Furious Customs.
We also suggest the 17x9" spec of this wheel for a more track-focused fitment.
SSR GTV02 Wheel – 18x9.5” +40 via @DVOLVED
discontinued
Also joining the ranks of “inexpensive, racing wheels” is the SSR GTV01. SSR uses a flow-form technology to make these wheels, which basically is a combination of forging and cast technologies. The result is a light weight wheel that doesn’t break the bank. Their GTV02 wheel is super clean with its 10 concave spoke face that looks more OEM meets motorsports.
NS M01 Wheel - 18x8.5" +35 via Lewis Tan
discontinued
Sometimes, clean is best when it comes to the style of wheels you choose for your car. Lewis went with the NS Wheels M01 wheel which is a classic 5 spoke design that takes away the attention from the wheels and puts it more on the car itself. After all, the wheels are meant to be a functional accessory that makes your car look and perform better. Lewis's FR-S features a bunch of rare JDM parts like the TRD rear window louvre, DAMD gauge pack, NARDI steering wheel, and Clazzio seat covers.
Our FR-S went through many wheel stages during its life as a Furious Customs project car and one was a “show style” phase (although we used this wheel setup for racing, as well!). It was a custom order from Japan in this spec that took around 6 months to arrive, but the effect was well worth it!
You’ll notice in the picture above that the wheel had a larger lip in the rear. This was not due to a staggered setup, but it was because we selected the different face on the front to allow for a larger brake kit.
As with most “Show Style” wheels, wheel weight is normally not of utmost
importance so please keep that in mind!
Rotiform TMB – 18x10.5” +10 via @spencer_nielsen_
We love being a full Rotiform wheels dealer and the options that a 3 piece custom forged wheel bring to the table. 3 Piece custom wheels are made in any spec, offset, finish, and lip design that the customer wants.
These custom wheels take 3-4 months to create but for those looking to really set their ride apart from the crowd, it may be the only option.
The ESM 002R wheel, pictured here in black chrome with gold rivets, is a classic mesh design in one of the most aggressive fitments offered by ESM. In this 17x10" fitment, it has a deep 4" step lip.
Work Meister M1 - 18x9.5" -34 / 18x10.5" -45
These 3 piece Work Meister M1 wheels in MGM finish really top off this extreme LB Performance / Rocket Bunny equipped Toyota 86. We love how aggressive it sits with these high end, three piece wheels. With any successful build, it's all in the details and you can tell that the owner of this car went the extra mile for getting the stance just right.
3SDM 0.06 – 18x9.5” +38 via @636i
3SDM is a name known mostly in the Euro scene (VW, Audi), though we think their 0.06 wheel looks pretty good on the FR-S / BRZ / 86 as well!
One thing that’s really cool about the 0.06 wheel is that it is fully directional – meaning that the “swirl” on left side wheels will be facing the same direction as the right side. This effect required 3SDM to make two molds per size – a measure that effectively makes their production run a lot more expensive – but we think it’s worth it. After all, the devil is in the details when it comes to show car!
Work Meister S1R Meister – 18x9.5” -15 / 18x10.5” -40 via Stancenation
One of Work Wheels’ most celebrated designs is the S1R Meister. This three piece wheel can be made in a ton of different sizes and offset combinations making the 3+ month lead time all the more worth it. It will usually have a large lip with some very curvy 5 spokes in a contrasting color, resulting in a high amount of “neck breaking” opportunities at car shows.
Furious Customs is a Work Wheels dealer, so please contact us regarding pricing and lead times for ordering a set of Work Wheels from Japan.

So now you have decided on your dream set of wheels that fits in your budget, but what else will you need?
Besides tires, you’ll need a few things to pull off the JDM Motorsports or Show Style looks described above.
We believe in doing things right the first time, so we are fans of coilovers. Coilovers are basically a strut / shock with the springs already loaded and are made per application.
They are adjustable with dampening and height so if your needs change, you can do so on the fly. For example, if you drive your FR-S / BRZ / 86 daily and take it to the track on the weekend, you can easily adjust the height and dampening properties to make the coilover stiffer if needed.
Our Favorites
One of the highest acclaimed coilovers for the FR-S / BRZ / 86 is the German made KW V3 set. It is one of the highest quality coilovers on the market and is a great middle ground for a car that is daily driven with the monthly track day.
Japanese brand TEIN is known for its comfortable coilovers that can also be stiffened up for track duty with high quality rebounding for fast cornering. The entry level Street Basis line is perfect for those looking to get a high quality brand with an affordable price point.
If you want the functionality of coilovers without having to pay more than your wheels did, then the Megan Racing Street Series is the way to go!
Lowering springs simply replace the stock springs on your FR-S / BRZ / 86 and have different qualities like ride height and rebound rate. They often will lower the car 1-2” and offer a bit stiffer ride quality, making the car look better on aftermarket wheels and making for a more aggressive, better cornering ride.
Our Favorites
Eibach knows springs. Since as long as I can remember, Eibach has been THE NAME for high quality lowering springs. This German brand makes springs for a variety of vehicles, almost every one on the market, and the Sportline line is their lowest and most aggressive spring offered for the FR-S / BRZ / 86.
Lowering the car 1.4” all around, this kit for under $300 is a perfect buy for wanting a great visual effect with not much sacrifice to ride quality.
Very comparable in ride quality and height adjustment to the Eibach springs, the TEIN S.TECH springs keep things Japanese on your FR-S / BRZ / 86. These are designed with the more spirited driver in mind and lower the car around 1.3” all around. For under $250, you can’t beat the quality and JDM appeal of the TEIN S.TECH lowering springs.
An essential upgrade that come with new wheels are “tuner style” lug nuts. Aftermarket lug nuts are usually very light and available in a wide range of finishes.
Please keep in mind to choose 12x1.25 thread size for the size on your Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 lug nuts. Any other size will not fit on the bolts of your car.
Our Favorites
Muteki SR48 Open Ended Lug Nuts
Starting under $100, a full set of lightweight lug nuts like these Japanese made Muteki lug nuts are perfect for any starter set of aftermarket wheels on your FR-S / BRZ / 86.
At 56g per lug nut, they aren’t the lightest on the market, but the styling and colors (and price tag) will get the job done. These aluminum lug nuts are available in a ton of colors and finishes and one of our favorites for an introductory package.
Project Kics R26 Lug Nuts
Coming in at 26g per lug nut, this premium set of lug nuts not only looks amazing, but performs amazing as well. Made by renowned Japanese company Mackin Industries (think: Volk Racing), these high quality lug nuts belong on high quality race wheels or show style wheels.
So there we go! We hope that you got inspired by this post and envision how you want your Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 to look with a proper set of wheels.
If you have any questions regarding wheel fitment, styles, or brands that we might carry at Furious Customs, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. We are here to help build your dream car within the budget that you have.
