Among
the many cars featured at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS), the Toyota 86 /
Scion FR-S was clearly the most prominently featured with 91 different
examples that entered. The three that stood out most to us were the ones from
Modellista, TOM’S, and TRD. TRD Griffon Toyota 86 First off, the TRD Griffon 86 as pictured above is simply amazing. It has a stock, unmodified engine but with huge weight savings in the form of carbon fiber replacement parts, polycarbonate windows, and removing other interior pieces, the car managed to run a 1’01.87 lap time at Tsukuba racetrack. To put that in perspective, a Ferrari 458 Italia has a lap time of 1’02.24 on the same track in the same conditions. Imagine just how much faster this 86 could be with a beefed up engine to pair with its lightweight and nimble chassis. It’s futuristic look with the LED strips and more aggressive lines indicate what the next 86 generation may look like. The head lights are also slightly different with more of a projector look to them. Modellista is a division of Toyota in Japan that offers special versions of vehicles to the public through the Toyota dealerships, so one can hope that this front facade will someday translate to a dealer option! TOM’S NO86V Concept As dealers of TOM’S products, we are happy to see their large interest in the 86. As a renowned Toyota tuner, of course they would invest heavily in the 86’s future – you can even buy their parts at dealerships throughout Japan! This “NO86V” concept that was built for TAS features a swapped engine from a Lexus GS350. Yes, this 86 has a 3.5 liter V6! The wild engine swap mixed with the classic styling of older hachi-rokus makes for a very interested concept car. Everything on this car is complete and works with the theme – the over fenders, old school split 4 spoke wheels, and the famous TOM’S Barrel-W exhaust featuring 4 exhaust tips, as inspired by the Lexus IS-F. The interior has also been blessed with many TOM’S carbon fiber accessories, though I really can’t wait to see how it performs on track with the V6 swap. It would definitely make the car heavier and not as nimble, but will the straight line performance make up for it? |
